All train tickets you buy from within the state going into Melbourne automatically include an extension to use the trams, trains and buses within Zones 1 and 2 for that day. It's not like an extension you ask for with our tickets at home.
There is an Oyster card-like system called "myki" here, which you can use out in some places in the sticks and all about town. Paper magnetic-strip tickets in the city for the trams and trains and buses are called "met cards". You can buy 2-hour tickets (AUD$6) or daily tickets (AUD$11), and if they're validated after 6PM, they're valid until 3AM the next day. They're sold pretty much everywhere, but they're different to our paper ticketing system, whereby if you purchase the ticket in advance and do not validate it, unless it has a state expiry date, you can save it for use another day. So, for example, I buy a daily ticket on the Tuesday but then decide not to travel, I can still use it for another day. Quite handy really, as it understands that people change their minds, and therefore you don't lose your cash. Not like if you buy a Travelcard back home.
