RIP District Dave
16/1/1952 - 17/3/2011
"District Dave" Maloney passed away today after a long-term illness. He is probably one of a few people that I consider to be a great legend of the Underground, but he is unique in the way that he didn't just help and support his fellow colleagues with his working knowledge, but he was also a great source of information to those outside of the company, something he was very keen to share on his original website.
He built a great online and offline community, mainly connected through his forum, with a membership that consists of staff, passengers and enthusiasts alike from all over the world. In person though, he was very friendly, open and honest, as well as a true gentleman. This photo was taken back in March 2007, around the time I'd got the job on LUL, after a day out at the Acton Depot Open Weekend. We'd all gone out to the Red Lion and Pineapple pub up the road, and the one thing I observed about Dave was the fact he got around the tables and spent time chatting to everybody, those he knew very well and those he was meeting for the very first time. When he couldn't find a seat, he just squatted on the floor and continued chatting away – talk about dedication! A very interesting individual who was also quite a talented guitarist (from what he told me anyway! – I was shown pictures of him on stage in his hey-days at a later date as proof). He got me a celebratory drink and I have to say that I am quite humbled and honoured to have been able to buy him a few to say thanks for the knowledge and wisdom he has imparted to me before I joined the company.
I hope his site and forum will continue to remain on the web as part of his legacy of supporting others through sharing knowledge in a friendly environment. It so nice that everybody has such lovely memories of him, whether it was through chance meetings or otherwise. I can't say I have heard anybody say a bad word against him – he was that nice a guy – and I sincerely hope that London Underground commemorate all he has done for the company as well as the community, of which he has been an invaluable member of both.
My thoughts go out to his family and close friends.
