down is the new up
This could be applied to many things, but it's mainly displays of idiocy like this that one has to deal with on a daily basis. People think it's funny and/or clever – he was drunk, so he wasn't aware, but the amount of times I have watched something like this only to have the idiot fall over and smack their head on a step or knock over everybody else like bowling pins.
When somebody has an accident on an escalator, we have to follow a procedure whereby it is switched off and taped off and call out KONE to come and inspect it. This is partly because of the vast amounts of people who have turned around weeks and sometimes months later to sue the Underground through small claims courts. The call out to KONE itself costs LUL a large sum of money, but where it is concluded that the escalator was stopped due to passenger misuse, provided we have managed to obtain details like a name and address, the person responsible can be sure to find themselves a bill from KONE themselves. This is why there is a 'penalty' for misuse of the emergency stop diamonds – not that it is always enforced, but it all depends on how much of a doughnut you've been.
