before the scheduled departure time
Unknown to most of you guys, there's actually quite a lot of time between getting on a train in the sidings or depot in the mornings and actually getting on the move.
Service-wise, Sunday mornings typically get off to a later start. On the night shift, I'm typically on my train about an hour before I'm due to set off (because the train allocation is usually published by about 4am), and the early turn drivers normally start arriving by taxi about 50 minutes before they're due to shunt.
Night shifts are a pain whatever time of year you have to do them, but I don't mind them so much in the summer when you can watch the light of the day come into life when you're sitting around waiting.
