Scheduled at 19:30 of this Tuesday, 23, the opening mass is the official beginning of World Youth Day. The celebration will be presided by the Archbishop of the San Sebastian Archdiocese of Rio de Janeiro, Dom Orani Tempesta. The Eucharist is a central event for the Christian faith and that is why WYD will start with a Eucharistic celebration. The Archbishop will have with him seven auxiliary bishops from Rio de Janeiro and around 1500 ministers, among them cardinals, bishops and priests. The first reading (1 Samuel 3: 3b-10, 3:19) will be in Spanish, the responsorial Psalm and the gospel in Portuguese and the second reading (Rom 1:1-7) will be in English. The reading of a message from Cardinal Stanislaw Rylko, president of Pontifical Council for the Laity, will end the celebration.

The program will start earlier, at 15:00, with the welcoming of pilgrims from all around the world and artistic presentations, as well as moments of prayer on the stage built in Copacabana, a famous Brazilian beach. “It is a place that is iconic for the city and everyone knows what Copacabana means to Rio de Janeiro’s identity, and it also bears the name of Our Lady”, says the Archbishop. The “Coral Carioca JMJ” (WYD Rio Choir), which is formed by 100 catholic artists from the parishes of Rio’s Archdioceses, will perform for the public. International volunteers will also sing the WYD Hymn in other languages.

The arrival of the WYD symbols, the Pilgrim Cross and the Icon of Our Lady, at 18:00 will invite the pilgrims to a moment of recollection before Mass. The symbols have been in Brazil since September 2011, and have travelled through 250 dioceses, in all regions of the country. They will be welcomed on stage by the singers that will interpret the song “Emanuel”, accompanied by the Coral Carioca JMJ. On this occasion, the Postal president, Wagner Pinheiro de Oliveira, will release the commemorative stamp of Pope Francis´s visit to Brazil. An album with the stamp will be given as a gift to the Secretary of the Vatican State, Cardinal Tarcisio Bertone.

After the Eucharistic celebration, the day will end with musical performances by Migueli, Rex Band, Eros Biondini, Francisco Avello and Celina Borges. The Missionario Shalom band, the singers Suely Façanha, Davidson Silva, Cristiano Pinheiro, Ana Gabriela, Alfareros, Rodrigo Ferreira (Missão Louvor e Glória) and the Symphonic Orchestra of Barra Mansa complete the musical panel of the ceremony. Copacabana Stage

The back of the stage is an enormous curve inspired by the hills of the city. It will also work as a screen, where several images will be projected during the show. In the center, a 17 meter high cross and a cover area, where Pope Francis will remain during the event. Four circular platforms of different heights form the structure: one will have the orchestra; the other will receive the choir and the other to receive bishops and cardinals that will stay on stage with the Pontiff. In the center, a curved staircase and a flat stage. Also, there will be a access ramp, that will allow the entrance of the Popemobile. “The irregular outline of Rio de Janeiro hills was the most important for my inspiration. This central stage is a sculpture”, said Abel Gomes, architect responsible for the stage.
