Autumnal Reflection in Madrid (Templo de Debod)
The Temple of Debod is an ancient Egyptian temple which was rebuilt in Madrid, Spain.
The temple was built originally in southern Egypt very close to the first cataract of the Nile and to the great religious center dedicated to the goddess Isis, in Philae. In the early 2nd century BC, Adikhalamani (Tabriqo), the Kushite king of Meroë, started its construction by building a small single room chapel dedicated to the god Amun.
In 1960, due to the construction of the Great Dam of Aswan and the consequent threat posed to several monuments and archeological sites, UNESCO made an international call to save this rich historical legacy. As a sign of gratitude for the help provided by Spain in saving the temples of Abu Simbel, the Egyptian state donated the temple of Debod to Spain in 1968.
The temple was rebuilt in one of Madrid's parks, the Parque del Oeste, near the royal palace of Madrid, and opened to the public in 1972. It constitutes one of the few works of ancient Egyptian architecture which can be seen outside Egypt and the only one of its kind in Spain.

Sous la présidence de Gamal Abdel Nasser, l'Égypte se lance, en 1954, dans la construction du haut barrage d'Assouan. Les eaux du lac ainsi généré vont alors engloutir la vallée du Haut-Nil depuis Assouan jusqu'à la cataracte de Dal au Soudan. Cette région connue depuis l'antiquité sous le nom de Nubie recèle d'importants trésors archéologiques dont de nombreux temples antiques. Aussi, en 1959, les gouvernements égyptien et soudanais demandent de l'aide à l'UNESCO afin de sauver ces sites1.
Une vaste campagne internationale pour la sauvegarde des monuments de Nubie est alors engagée. De nombreux sites sont démantelés pour être reconstruits ailleurs dont le temple de Debod en 19602.
L'Espagne participant à cette vaste entreprise internationale, l'Égypte, pour la remercier, lui offre, en 1968, le temple de Debod. De même, les Pays-Bas reçoivent celui de Tafa, les États-Unis d’Amérique, celui de Dendour et l'Italie, celui d'Ellesiya3.
