Craugastor stejnegerianus – Stejneger’s Flesh-bellied Frog
Craugastor stejnegerianus – Stejneger’s Flesh-bellied Frog
On December 22nd after spending a long time getting the car packed up and my suitcases secured back on top of the rental car it was time to leave the cloud forest. Our next stop was the Osa Peninsula south of Puerto Jimenez where we had rented a house on the beach for the next 7 nights. We called the next rental our Christmas house since that is where we would celebrate Christmas 2020. We arrived at our rental after dark there and met the caretaker of the property and his son. The caretaker didn't know English but his son knew it very well and was able to give us a good tour of the property and filled us in on everything. We got unpacked and I got some gear together to go for a night hike with my son. It was already really late like 11:30PM but I was excited to finally be in a warmer area where we could do a night hike for reptiles and amphibians. So we drove Southwest to an offshoot road that I had scoped out on a map before our trip. We found a little trail through some nice habitat and we were able to find a couple of species of frogs a couple of green tree anoles sleeping in the tall bushes and a fer de lance snake that got away without a photo. It was a good start to exploring this new area. On our way back to our car I swear I heard a jaguar howling/growling in the distance. I tried to get some audio of it and listened to some recordings later and it definitely sounded similar.
