Great Horned Owl 2 - It really is an owl
I have wanted to get a picture of a Great Horned Owl for a long time. I have seen them many times at night while driving down roads in the mountains and the desert but every time I stop and shine a light on them or try to get out of the car they fly off. I saw my first daytime one a few weeks ago in Montana but only had my 60mm macro with me at the time and it was far off and didn't wait around for me to get my bigger lens. Well on Labor Day I was headed south on the highway bordering Bear lake between Idaho and Utah as it was getting dark and had owls on my mind. I was eyeing the telephone poles and anything else that might be a roost. I saw several hawks perched and then on a post of a dilapidated barn is that an owl? I stopped my car and turned around hoping my eyes weren't mistaken and that it wasn't just a decoration. Sure enough there across the road from my now parked car was a Great Horned Owl. I took several pics before it flew to the telephone pole on my side of the street so I drove my car across the street and snapped some more. Here is a series of 3 of my favorite shots numbered in the order they were taken.
