United States Army Garrison Fort Hamilton hosted its annual Military Retiree Appreciation Day on Oct. 27, 2023. The event honored the service and sacrifices of military retirees and their families.
Garrison Commander Col. Brian A. Jacobs welcomed attendees. Retired Sgt. 1st Class Charles Byrd, chairman of the event, also addressed the audience. Retirement Services Officer Sgt. 1st Class Wanda Mills welcomed retirees.
Other speakers included Lynn M. Peterson, outreach specialist and veteran coordinator for Headquarters Department of the Army Soldier for Life; Samuel B. Cottes, director of corporate communications for the U.S. Family Health Plan; and Rhonda Harrison-Morris of the U.S. Family Health Plan.
During the ceremony, awards were presented by the command team, and vocalist Michelle Dellafave provided musical entertainment singing patriotic songs. Retiree Council Chaplain Aryeh Oberstein delivered the benediction.
A wellness fair was held at the gym, followed by a lunch buffet at the Fort Hamilton community club, and a musical performance by the New York Army National Guard’s 42nd Infantry “Rainbow” Division Band.
The day's events culminated with the traditional cake cutting with a saber by the command team with retirees from all military branches. The cutting of the cake with a saber symbolizes the Army’s commitment to retirees and their service and readiness to defend the nation when they were serving.
