Preventing Torture and Helping Survivors Rebuild Their Lives
On the International Day in Support of Victims of Torture, Ambassador Michèle Taylor, joined High Commissioner for Human Rights Volker Türk, Ambassador Erik Rasmussen of Denmark, and Ambassador Luis Chuquihuara Chil of Peru to address a special event on the sidelines of the Human Rights Council to draw attention to the the ongoing scourge of torture and highlight the important role of the U.N. Voluntary Fund for Victims of Torture (UNVFVT). Scott Roehm, Director of Global Policy and Advocacy of the Center for Victims of Torture (CVT) moderated a panel discussion including Natasha Nzazi (survivor, advocate, service provider, and Fund beneficiary), Dr. Vivienne Nathanson (Member of the Board of Trustees of the Fund), and Dr. Peter Vedel Kessin. The U.S., Peru, Denmark, and many other UN member states spoke of the impact of the fund and the importance of contributions.
“All of us are united in our commitment to ending torture and supporting victims, “ said Ambassador Michèle Taylor. “While both international law and common humanity are clear on the subject, the sad fact is that torture remains all too prevalent in the world today.”
