Bologna, Italy

Bologna's most spectacular site is these two towers, both built in the 12th century by noble families as a sign of their wealth and power. The Asinelli tower, the tallest of the two, which can be climbed, stands 97m and leans by 2m. The shorter of the towers, the Garisenda tower, is 48m high with a lean of 3m.

It is thought that in the medieval period Bologna had about 180 towers.
