UN supports South Sudan gender mainstream
UNMISS, UN Women and the United Nations Development Programme are supporting the government of South Sudan in ensuring gender mainstreaming in the country’s process of security sector reform, as stipulated in South Sudan’s revitalized peace agreement. One step in that direction was taken on 13 May, when the South Sudan's National Security Sector Women’s Network was launched. The network aims to attract more women to join the security sector and to empower female personnel by means of capacity building.
The creation of the network is in line with both the implementation of the UN Security Council Resolution 1325 (on women’s right to be effective participation in decision making related to issues of peace and security) and Goal 16 of the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development, to “build effective, accountable and inclusive institutions at all levels”.
