4-H&FFA Swine at 2015 Super Fair - 010

4-H and FFA youth in the swine (hog or pig) animal science project learn how to raise, take care of, and show swine. The 4-H/FFA Swine Show at the Lancaster County Super Fair includes Showmanship, Breeding Gilts, Market Classes, Pen of Three, and a Carcass Contest.

All exhibitors are expected to care for their meat goats (feed, water and manure disposal) and cooperate in keeping stalls and alleys clean, neat and attractive. 4-H clubs and FFA chapters are automatically judged for Herdsmanship ribbons.

Lancaster County has a Pick-a-Pig 4-H club which provides urban youth the opportunity to participate in a 4-H livestock project. Local producers purchase and house the project pigs, leasing them to the 4-H’ers.

In Nebraska, the 4-H youth development program for ages 5-18 is part of University of Nebraska-Lincoln Extension. Learn more about Lancaster County 4-H at lancaster.unl.edu/4h. Learn more about FFA, Future Farmers of America, at www.ffa.org.
