Mapping the eye

This image shows the blood vessel network in the retina of the eye mapped from an image taken with a specialised camera known as an ultra-widefield scanning laser ophthalmoscope. This technique allows five times more of the retina to be viewed at one time than a fundus camera. With computer analysis, it can detect changes in the blood vessels of the eye that may provide early warning signs of damage to blood vessels elsewhere in the body such as the heart. Scientists are investigating whether this information could help to monitor the progression and risk of disease, such as coronary heart disease.
