Chashnik--Covered Soup Tureen, 1923

Ilya Grigorevich Chashnik (1902-1929), Russian artist, designed the Covered Soup Tureen (1923) on display at the Virginia Museum of Fine Arts in Richmond; it’s hard-paste porcelain and enamel and was made by State Porcelain Manufactory (Lomonosov Porcelain Factory), Leningrad (1917-1924). He was born in Ludza, Latvia and died in St. Petersburg, Russia. He’s classified as a suprematist artist, adept at painting, poster art, architecture, ceramics and metalwork.
