The Severed Hand

This outdoor seat in the shape of a hand is located in I. C. DeHart Memorial Park, perhaps four miles from Woolwine in Patrick County, Virginia (on state route 40). "I. C. DeHart Memorial Park supports a beautiful reclaimed wetland site with a boardwalk and extensive interpretive information. An asphalt walking trail offers access for more physically challenged visitors. Numerous signs in the area provide information about the insects, reptiles, birds and plants found in the wetland as well as documenting the history of its creation and ongoing community involvement in studying its ecology." But the solitary lawn furniture suggested something ominous, perhaps sinister. It reminded me of "The Hand" by de Maupassant, a story of hands which return to life for a malicious purpose. There are numerous literary examples of a severed hand and the evil lurking behind it. And of course there's the enigmatic song by Pearl Jam. For an author, there's a good horror story in this image.
