Demonstrations requesting protection of minorities
Erbil, 24 July 2014 – Hundreds of demonstrators marched today from Ainkawa to the United Nations Assistance Mission for Iraq Erbil Regional Office (ERO) to condemn the persecution of Christians and other minorities in Mosul and its environment by the fighters of ISIL and to demand action from the International Community, Government of Iraq and Authorities of the Kurdistan Region.
The demonstrations were organized by the various Christian churches, Civil Society Organizations, Christian political parties and youth organizations.
A group, composed of the religious leaders and the organizers of the demonstrations, including the Bishop of Mosul, the Bishop of Ainkawa and two Kurdish representatives of the Union of the Islamic Scholars who had come in solidarity with them, was received by the Head of the UNAMI ERO Mr. Sokol Kondi. They expressed their concerns regarding the recent events in Mosul and Ninewah province and their fear that if nothing would be done for the protection of Christians, and other minorities in this area, no Christians would be left in Mosul.
They presented Mr. Kondi with the Petition, addressed to the United Nations Secretary-General, humanitarian organizations, United Nations agencies, Kurdistan Regional Government, Government of Iraq, Council of Representatives and the international community, in which they listed their demands. Most urgently they appeal for the end the violence perpetrated against the Christians by ISIL and requested the provision of humanitarian aid, the payment of salaries by the Federal Government and the registration into schools and universities in the Kurdistan Region.
