UNDP Azerbaijan
World Environment Day marked in Azerbaijan
UNDP together with a local NGO “Ekosfera” Social – Ecological Center observed the World Environment Day. An interactive trip to the center in Gala village of Baku was organized to raise awareness on environmental protection and greening and familiarize participants with UNDP’s role in supporting the national efforts.
In the framework of the event, UNDP representatives talked about the results achieved through the joint projects implemented in Azerbaijan. Participants were informed that UNDP’s current projects on Sustainable Land and Forest Management, Summer Pasture Management, Nationally Appropriate Mitigation Action for low-carbon end-use and Marine Ecosystem projects brought sustainable practices into the local managing tradition in the country.
Followed by a Q&A session, participants were given a tour of the Center, the first ecological-ethnographic and archeological reserve in Azerbaijan. This center includes an organic demonstration farm (sheep breeding, plantation of cereals, fruit trees), traditional craft workshops (carpet making and felt), organic and craft eco-product shops. Participants learned about traditional methodologies in agriculture, agro-biodiversity conservation, obtaining of naturally pure products, and had an opportunity to observe the forgotten weaving culture of carpets.
Symbolizing a deeper commitment to environmental protection, a tree planting ceremony was held at the end of the trip.
World Environment Day was established by the United Nations General Assembly in 1972 to mark the opening of the Stockholm Conference on the Human Environment.. It is hosted and commemorated annually the week of June 5.
