Electrotyped matrix
Matrix produced by a galvanoplastisches Verfahren, e.g., an electrotyped matrix. This copper “eye” with the capital K has been placed into a metal blank to create a matrix for typecasting. To the right, you can see part of a matrix for a smaller-szed capital M in what is probably a different typeface all together. It is a copper matrix that would have been struck in the more traditional matter: with a steel punch.
Photographed at the Schriftgießerei Gerstenberg at the Haus für Industriekultur in Darmstadt – an Außenstelle of the Hessisches Landesmusuem.
