GelidonyaMilkyPan
I photographed this scene at Cape Gelidonya, near Kumluca, Antalya, Turkey,
In the foreground is Gelidonya Lighthouse, in service of the mariners since 1936. This is last rocky headland of the Anatolian subcontinent before the Mediterranean takes over. Just off shore are five rocky islands, named Besadalar (meaning Five Islands) or again Gelidonya Islands. And then only the sea. Next land: Africa, 700 km away.
This is a 4x2-picture panorama of the summer Milky Way rising in the east. To take the eight individual pictures that make this composite, I used the modified 5D at ISO 3200 and 24 mm f/1.4 lens at f/2. I used a diffuser filter during half of each 30-second exposure while I tracked the camera on my manual equatorial drive. I constructed the composite with PtGui Pro and made final adjustments with Adobe Photoshop.
