American actor Mark Hamill (1951) is best known for his portrayal of Luke Skywalker in the original Star Wars trilogy - Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (1977), Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (1980), and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983) - a role he reprised in Star Wars: Episode VII - The Force Awakens (2015), Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (2017) and Star Wars: Episode IX - The Rise of Skywalker (2019). He also starred and co-starred in the films Corvette Summer (1978), The Big Red One (1980), and Kingsman: The Secret Service (2014). He is a prolific voice actor who has portrayed characters in numerous animated television series, films and video games including a long-standing role as the Joker, commencing with Batman: The Animated Series (1992).

Mark Richard Hamil was born in 1951 in Oakland, California, to Virginia Suzanne (Johnson) and William Thomas Hamill. His father was a captain in the United States Navy, so the family often had to change residence. As a result, Hamill grew up in California, Virginia, New York and Japan. He majored in drama at Los Angeles City College and made his acting debut on The Bill Cosby Show (1971). He then played Kent Murray, a recurring role in the soap opera General Hospital (1963) and co-starred in the comedy series The Texas Wheelers (1974). He made his film debut in the TV movie Eric (James Goldstone, 1975) opposite John Savage and Patricia Neal and also had a supporting role in the TV Movie Sarah T. - Portrait of a Teenage Alcoholic (Richard Donner, 1975) starring Linda Blair. Hamill had his breakthrough in Star Wars - Episode IV - A New Hope (George Lucas, 1977). Robert Englund, with whom he shared a flat, had persuaded him to audition for the role of Han Solo. Hamill eventually got the role of Luke Skywalker. The film was an enormous unexpected success and made a huge impact on the film industry. He was originally cast as David Bradford in the TV series Eight Is Enough (1977), but Hamill was in a car crash in December 1976 and fractured his nose and left cheekbone. This made him unavailable for shooting the television series. Hamill appeared again as Luke Skywalker in The Star Wars Holiday Special (Steve Binder, 1978) and later starred in the successful sequels Star Wars: Episode V - The Empire Strikes Back (Irvin Kershner, 1980), and Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (Richard Marquand, 1983). For both of the sequels, Hamill was honoured with the Saturn Award for Best Actor given by the Academy of Science Fiction, Fantasy and Horror Films. In between the Star Wars films, he also starred in the films Corvette Summer (Matthew Robbins, 1978) and the war drama The Big Red One (Samuel Fuller, 1980) starring Lee Marvin.

Mark Hamill reprised the role of Luke Skywalker for the NPR radio dramatisations of both Star Wars (1981) and The Empire Strikes Back (1983). After Star Wars, he concentrated more on theatre and appeared in several Broadway productions, such as 'The Elephant Man' and 'Amadeus'. From the 1990s on, he focused on voice acting. He played The Jokes in eight different Batman series: Batman: The Animated Series (1992), Superman: The Animated Series (1996), The New Batman Adventures (1997), Static Shock (2000), Justice League (2001), Birds of Prey (2002), Robot Chicken (2001) and Justice League Action (2016). He has also voiced the Hobgoblin in Spider-Man (1994–1998), Fire Lord Ozai in Avatar: The Last Airbender (2005–2008), Skips in Regular Show (2010–2017), and the DC Comics supervillain, The Trickster, in both live-action in The Flash (1990) and animated form in Justice League (2001). He appeared in Jay and Silent Bob Strike Back (Kevin Smith, 2001), which also starred Carrie Fisher. It was the first time the two had starred together since Star Wars: Episode VI - Return of the Jedi (1983). Neither of them knew that the other was involved in the project until shortly after filming had been completed. After 32 years, Hamill returned as Luke Skywalker in Star Wars: Episode VII: The Force Awakens (J.J. Abrams, 2015), Star Wars: Episode VIII - The Last Jedi (Rian Johnson, 2017), Star Wars: Episode IX: The Rise of Skywalker (J.J. Abrams, 2019), and the two live-action series The Mandalorian (2020) and The Book of Boba Fett (2021). In between, he voiced the new Chucky in Child's Play (Lars Klevberg, 2019), taking over from Brad Dourif. Since 1978, Mark Hamill is married to Marilou York, a dental hygienist. They have three children: Nathan (1979), Griffin (1983) and Chelsea Hamill (1988). In 2018, Hamill received a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame.
