On 29 July 2022, Dutch actress and artist Janine van Wely (1937) passed away. She acted in Dutch films and such classic TV series as Pipo de Clown. She was 84.

Johanna Maria van Wely was born in Breda, The Netherlands, in 1937. In the 1960s, she became known when she replaced Jasperina de Jong in the famous Lurelei cabaret. She also played small parts in such films as Het mes/The Knife (Fons Rademakers, 1961), De vergeten medeminnaar/The forgotten co-lover (Giovanni Korporaal, 1963) with Henk van Ulsen, and the thriller 10.32 (Arthur Dreifuss, 1966), starring Linda Christian. On TV, she could be seen in popular shows such as Rudi Carrell Show and between 1971 and 1980 in the legendary children's show Pipo de Clown. The original series with Cor Witschge in the role of the clown Pipo started in 1958 and ran until 1980. Pipo ran away from Dikke Deur's (Fat Door) circus and now lives with his wife Mammaloe (first Christel Adelaar, later Marijke Bakker) and his daughter Petra in a caravan pulled by the donkey Nononono. They travel the world and experience all kinds of strange adventures. Pipo's best friend is Klukkluk (Herbert Joeks), an Indian who has an unsuccessful archery act in Pipo's shows. From 1971 onwards, Dutch public television broadcasted a number of long Pipo stories. However, Cor Witschge was now replaced by Cees van Oyen and Marijke Bakker by Janine van Wely, due to a business conflict regarding their photo rights and in their capacity as Pipo and Mammaloe. However, the replacement in the series Pipo op Bizarra (1971) did not appeal to the public and the old actors were asked to return for the next series.

However, Van Wely was allowed to return as Pipo's sister Plom, from the series Pipo in Marobia (1974) onwards. The feature film Pipo en de Piraten van Toen (Kees van Eyk, 1975) was released in the cinemas and was broadcast a year later as a five-part series. Three more series followed, Pipo en de Lachplaneet (Paul Cammermans, 1976), Pipo en de Noorderzon (Nico Knapper, 1978) and Pipo in West Best (Nico Knapper, 1980). In 1980, the last of a total of 577 broadcasts of Pipo de clown took place. Dutch television decided to discontinue the programme because it had become too expensive. Without any farewell or sign of appreciation for the writer, the series ended. However, Pipo de Clown remained popular on VHS and television and in the following decades, several new TV, film and stage versions were made, but without Van Wely. She also appeared on television as a princess in the children's series Koning Bolo/King Bolo (1977) with Wim van den Heuvel. One of her final screen appearances was in a TV adaptation of an Agatha Christie mystery, De patiënte/The patient (Fritz Butzelaar, 1982). The TV film was withdrawn from broadcasting twice, and only finally premiered in 1986 under a new title, Opzet of ongeluk/Planned, or accident. Janine van Wely lived in Amsterdam where she worked as an artist. In 2022, she died of cancer in her homeplace at the age of 84. She was married to Rob van der Linden.
