Ravenna, Vespri a San Vitale
A concert by the ensemble Lumen Luminum during the Ravenna Festival, Basilica di San Vitale, Ravenna, Italy.
The Basilica di San Vitale in Ravenna dates from the mid-6th century and contains what are probably the finest Byzantine mosaics in the western world.
During the Ravenna Festival, we visited a concert in the series Vespri a San Vitale (Vespers at San Vitale) by the ensemble Lumen Luminum. They performed Salve virgo virginum, Salve luminum lumens, a program dedicated to Marian devotion in the Middle Ages with music by Hildegard von Bingen and Guillaume Du Fay. The ensemble consists of four young students (Kim Min Jung voice and lute, Kairi Kosk and Jonatas Luis Monteiro voices, Teodora Tommasi voice and harp) of the medieval music class of the Municipal School of Music Claudio Abbado in Milan. They were wonderful, especially Kim Min Jung.
