Ancient, Christian medal depicting the rosary
An early depiction of Christian rosary beads.
The photo is of the reverse side of a St. Dominic medal, circa 14th century - depicting Mary and infant Jesus both holding rosaries.
An early depiction of the rosary and its connection with St. Dominic, who is credited with reviving and popularising the much earlier Christian practice of using rosary beads as an aid to prayer.
It is interesting that there are fifteen beads around the rosary, rather than the 5 decades of ten separated by single beads in a modern rosary, a total of 55 beads.
Ten times round such an ancient rosary of fifteen beads would be the equivalent of the 150 psalms which the rosary prayer represented, but with recitation of the Angelic Psalter (the annunciation of the Angel Gabriel to Mary) taking the place of the psalms.
"Hail Mary full of Grace, the Lord is with thee"
The words of the Angel Gabriel "full of grace" repeated in the praying of the rosary, is confirmation of the doctrine of the 'Immaculate Conception'. This is the belief in the Church that Mary was conceived without original sin. That she did not inherit original sin from Adam and Eve.
