Common Loon (Gavia immer) COLO

Even though not a new bird for me, this was my favorite bird from our last Maine trip.....and the last bird of the visit as we returned to the mainland on the ferry. I wish it was a sharper image, but photographer excitement, a pitching boat and a loon paddling furiously away from us produced this result. I always thought that these beautiful markings belonged to the males, but learned that these breeding colors apply to both sexes during Mar-Oct.
