The Lone Tree

by Trevor Dobson

I guess I can call myself somewhat of a specialist with these types of shots by now ;-)
But it's somewhat been forced on me. The flat and featureless landscape that dominates the south west of Australia means we sometimes have to think outside the box with our compositions. We don't have spectacular mountain scenery or deep canyons with amazing geological features to incorporate into our night sky photography. What we do have are lots of empty horizons that are occasionally broken up by a lone tree. It's a simple composition but works well and provides nice contrast between the vastness of the universe set against this tiny little bit of life on planet Earth....and people seem to like them, which is an added bonus!
