Get Pushed…Rolling Challenge
TMSH 2/13/sh13 – Friday - Photograph taken Friday 1st, 2013
52/2013 Week 5
ODC January 31 - Immortal
113in2013 55 - Solitude
The Rolling Challenge came from bennettjohnson (www.flickr.com/people/55100806@N08/) “Think vast, open, expansive.” And when I think of vast, open, expansive – I think of space, the night sky, the desert, endless wheat fields, in short I was thinking bigger than life landscapes.
This was a good challenge. While I've taken many landscape photographs, none of them have been particularly spectacular. (For the record I don’t think this one is particularly spectacular either.) But I have lucked out on a few over of the years. I thought, though, that I should do a bit of research to discover what makes a good landscape and some techniques to try.
The first thing I learned was the “Sunny 16” rule. I’d never heard of it before but it’s tucked away for the future when the sun finally returns to the valley I live in. (To get a correct exposure in sunny conditions, at f16 your shutter speed should be the inverse of the ISO you’re using.)
Then I learned about “Hyperfocal Distance”. Here was the science behind some lucky shots I’ve had and now that I better understand what this is, perhaps I’ll be able to get more consistent results with my landscapes. (Hyperfocal distance is the closest distance at which a lens can be focused while keeping objects at infinity acceptably sharp.)
So here is my first attempt at using Hyperfocal Distance and although it’s not a bigger than life landscape I think there’s a certain vastness about it. I was definitely Pushed.

ODC - Immortal. While I know that mountains have a finite lifespan; it's so great that they appear Immortal. Well, at least they seem that way to me.
113in2013 - Solitude. On days like this I enjoy the solitude of being in a place like this.
