Les Pêcheurs de Perles
I must confess that I wasn’t looking forward to this week’s challenge but as the week wore on I started to focus more on what I would like to photograph with the possible music it could be associated rather than the reverse. This was the key for me.
Les Pêcheurs de Perles, Bizet’s first opera in 1863 (the composer was only 25 when he wrote the work) about a love triangle complicated by the true friendship of the two men involved. The song, ‘Au fond du temple saint’ is a tenor-baritone duet between the two pearl fisherman.

I first heard this in the 1981 movie ‘Gallipoli’ – a movie that follows the tragic fortunes of two Australian running champions who, caught up in the patriotic fervor of World War I, are sent to fight the Turks at Gallipoli. This song is heard in a scene at the commanding officer’s tent – he had brought a phonograph and records with him to remind him of a more civilized time away from the madness of war.
This piece, along with another operatic piece I heard in a 1981 movie (‘Diva’; ‘Ebben? ne andrò lontana’ from the opera ‘La Wally’) helped me to begin a discovery and appreciation of the world of opera.

And yes, I was listening to the Les Pêcheurs de Perles opera while I was photographing the pearls.
