Hemp Dogbane aka Indian Hemp (Apocynum cannabinum, Apocynaceae)
This is a new flowering plant of native Hemp Dogbane aka Indian Hemp (Apocynum cannabinum) in the Apocynaceae plant family. That's hemp as in fiber, not smoking. It's an uncommon plant in our mountains - I only know it from a few places. I wish the photo was taken in some uncommon habitat, but I found this one growing from a crack in the old asphalt of Kinevan Road! (San Marcos Pass, 6 June 2013)
This was one of the most important native plants for the native American Chumash in our mountains - for string, rope, nets, and clothing. For more info, see Jan Timbrook's book on Chumash Ethnobotany (2007).
