Fantastic little Bee Fly (Bombyliidae, Diptera) working flower of Trask's Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon traskiae, Hydrophyllaceae)
This is a fantastic little Bee Fly (family Bombyliidae) in the order Diptera about to insert its long proboscis into a flower of Trask's Yerba Santa (Eriodictyon traskiae) in the Hydrophyllaceae plant family. I didn't realize these flowers were so deep! You can see a bit of pollen on its proboscis. Thus pollination happens.(Santa Ynez Mountains, 30 May 2012)
This photo is not quite in focus, but its still very cool. See my [Newer] photo.
