Gabb's Checkerspot (Chlosyne gabbii) butterfly

This is a handsome Gabb's Checkerspot (Chlosyne gabbii) butterfly perched for a moment on new leaves of Sawtooth Goldenbush (Hazardia squarrosa, Asteraceae). I'm sure this one is newly emerged - it's the first one I've seen this year, and it's so darn pretty! These butterflies are quite variable, compare this photo from last year. Today started under clouds, but it cleared up early and was quite pleasant with temps in the mid-60s. There was little breeze in the morning, but it's been picking up as the day went on. Now there's a NWS Wind Advisory for Sundowner Winds on the coast tonight.
