Little "forest" of tiny sporophytes of the California Liverwort (Asterella californica, Marchantiophyta) on a sandstone outcrop

This is a neat little "forest" of tiny sporophytes of (I guess) the California Liverwort (Asterella californica, Marchantiophyta) on a sandstone outcrop in the woods today. It's interesting that the liverwort plants in the lower-left corner are producing the asexual buds known as gemmae instead of sporophytes. These plants can do either, and it always helps to have a backup strategy! (San Marcos Pass, 15 March 2016)
