Northern White-Skipper (Heliopetes ericetorum) butterfly on Scale Broom (Lepidospartum squamatum, Asteraceae)

This is a male Northern White-Skipper (Heliopetes ericetorum) butterfly on new flowers of native Scale Broom (Lepidospartum squamatum) in the (Asteraceae) plant family on a dry bluff above what's left of the the Santa Ynez River. Its host plant is native Chaparral Mallow (Malacothamnus fasciculatus, Malvaceae) which grows nearby, see my photo a few photos back. (Paradise, Santa Ynez River, 29 June 2015)

Damn, there's a new wildfire on Burton Mesa near Lompoc. This is one of our richest botanical places, and Alice Abela's home ground. We smelled the smoke at home, 30 miles away. It's going to be one hell of a wildfire season.
