"Butt shot" of Wild Bee (Anthophila, Hymenoptera) snuggling into a thistle flower

This is a "butt shot" of the same handsome little Wild Bee (Anthophila, Hymenoptera) that I show in this photo. It's snuggling into a new flower of the violet form of native Cobwebby Thistle (Cirsium occidentale var. californicum) in the Asteraceae plant family. I can't explain what I see here. Is that a stinger? HBBBT! (San Marcos Pass, 26 May 2015)
