Uppsala, Sweden - Old Uppsala Church - "Gamla Uppsala kyrka"

This church was built in the early 12th century. Archaeological excavations have revealed several large wooden structures underneath, believed to be that of the old Pagan Viking temple (and related buildings) that Adam of Breman wrote about in 1070 after a visit to this area. In his writings he mentions great wooden structures and temples dedicated to Thor/Tor, Odin and Freya/Freja.

In 1164 the present church became the seat of the archbishop and the cathedral for the Uppsala diocese. In the late 13th century the seat of the archbishop was moved taking the name of "Uppsala" with the church, leaving "Old" Uppsala where it stands today.
