Uppsala, Sweden - Uppsala Castle

Uppsala Castle, iniated by King Gustav Vasa, began as a fortress in 1549. The fortress portion is now a part below the south wing and the mound where the Gunilla Bell is standing.

The rest of the castle as seen today, were built after the fire in 1572 and finished around 1600.

Today Uppsala Castle houses an art gallery, some Uppsala University departments and is the home residence of the District Governor.
