Uppsala, Sweden - Uppsala University Runestone (Vigmund - front)
Runestone in Uppsala University campus park near the Uppsala Museum. This rune was found in 1910 in a part of what is Gamla Uppsala or "Old Uppsala" and was moved here for preservation. It is from the 11th century. Most of the runes in this park were found in that same area.
This runestone is unusual in that it has inscriptions on three sides instead of the more common one sided, frontal inscription. More unique is that the person written about had this rune erected for himself - perhaps a man with an ego.
Because of it's rarity this runestone was sent to Paris, France for the World Fair Exhibition in 1967.
The runic inscription (though broken) says: "Vigmund, shrewdest of men, had this stone cut in memory of himself. God help the soul of Vigmund the steersman. Vigmund and Åfrid cut the memorial in his lifetime."
