Night Sky among the Jeffery Pines

A night sky view at the beautiful Marian Campground in Los Padres National Forest. This campground is situated along a steep ridgeline with Bakersfield, CA to the north and the bulk of the southern branch of the Los Padres National Forest to the south. A very pleasant place to camp, most of the campsites are shaded by very large and beautiful Jeffery Pines: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jeffrey_pine. If you plan on venturing up to Marian Campground just make sure you have a foot or so of clearance with your vehicle as the road can be somewhat challenging: www.fs.usda.gov/recarea/lpnf/recarea/?recid=10988

In the sky this panorama captures a couple gems in the northern Milky Way. Starting from the right you can see the colorful Rho Ophiuchi cloud complex, making your left there is the large red area of nebulosity above the bulk of the Milky Way. Then further left past the middle of this image the Gamma Cygni nebula and North America Nebula are visible as glowing red clouds of mostly Hydrogen emissions. Lastly and furthest left is the red area of nebulosity the Elephant Trunk, however it's hard to see the 'trunk' feature in this image since it's quite a small feature to be seen in this wide field of view.
