Front Engine

Here you're looking at the front/leading engine under the 1309 locomotive frame. This front engine articulates so that the locomotive can go around tighter turns. The pistons on the low-pressure front engine are 35 inches in diameter where the pistons on the high-pressure rear engine are 22 inches in diameter. The engine uses high pressure steam first in the rear engine, and then "recycles" the steam into the low-pressure front engine. This makes the engine be known as a compound locomotive. It's really wild to see working in person. It sounds like two steam locomotives pulling the train, when it's just one giant behemoth.
