Bridging the Gap

I snapped this shot with my Note 4 cellphone while walking back to Harper's Ferry on the C&O Canal. You're looking at the Potomac River which meets up with the Shenandoah River at Harper's Ferry, WV. The bridge in the foreground is a very active railroad line.....the bridge in the background, I believe is still an active railroad line, but with minimal traffic. There is also a footpath on the background bridge for foot traffic across the Potomac.

Some friends of mine and myself decided to hike the entire Maryland Heights trail which amounts to nearly 6 miles of moderate to difficult hiking. A friend had a device counting his steps and it counted approx 20,000 steps for the hike! I can believe it because at many points going up, and almost the entire way down, you have to take small and cautious steps to keep from rolling your ankle or worse. At the top of Maryland Heights, there is the remains of a Union Army fort that existed to protect Harper's Ferry during the Civil War. Then there is a separate yet attached trail to a scenic overlook which allows you to see for a long distance over Harper's Ferry. It was grueling, challenging, painful.....yet I feel super-accomplished after doing it! I'm already ready to hike somewhere else! Well......maybe after my muscles stop aching from this hike! :-)
