R1512. Lewin No. 18 at Seaham Harbour. May, 1964.
1964/05.R1512. There was something rather special at Seaham Harbour on the coast of Co. Durham! This little gem is 0-4-0ST No.18 and it was built by Stephen Lewin of Poole in 1863. With a light axle loading, it was retained for working the breakwater maintenance trains.
It is now preserved at the nearby Open Air Museum at Beamish. (See comments box below for a 2012 picture.)
The National Coal Board once had extensive private railway systems in the North East of England and much coal was exported from Seaham Harbour.
