R1590. On the S&D.
R1590. On Sunday, 7th June, 1964 the London based Home Counties Railway Society ran a railtour over the Somerset & Dorset Railway. The train started from London Waterloo behind rebuilt Bulleid Merchant Navy Class Pacific 35005 CANADIAN PACIFIC and this was replaced by 7F 2-8-0 53807 and 4F 44558 at Bournemouth Central.
The Somerset & Dorset used to run between Bath and Bournemouth and was jointly operated by the Midland Railway and the London & South Western Railway, later the London, Midland & Scottish Railway and the Southern Railway. However, by the time of this photograph the line was split between the Western and Southern Regions of British Railways.
The dividing point was at Templecombe and, as this shot is somewhere north of there, it is in Western Region territory. If anyone can tell me exactly where, do please let me know.
Thanks to John Barnes and Will Berghoff I now know that this is Charlton Viaduct just to the east of Shepton Mallet. Thanks chaps.
