R1513. No 18 at Seaham Harbour. May, 1964.

1964/05.R1513. There was something rather special at Seaham Harbour on the coast of Co. Durham!

This little gem is 0-4-0ST No.18 and it was built by Stephen Lewin of Poole in 1863. With a light axle loading, it was retained for working the breakwater maintenance trains. It is now preserved at the nearby Open Air Museum at Beamish.

The National Coal Board once had extensive private railway systems in the North East of England and much coal was exported from Seaham Harbour.
