People's Palace
Located in Bucharest, Romania, the Palace of Parliament or the People's Palace is the largest legislative building in the world and the second largest government building behind only the Pentagon. Due to all of the marble and other rich furnishings, it is estimated to be the heaviest building in the world; in fact, this weight causes it to sink about half a centimeter each year. It was begun during the communist regime of the megalomaniacal dictator Nicolae Ceaușescu. An entire quarter of the old city was razed to create the space. The cost of this building virtually bankrupted the country leading to extreme hardship in the population which hastened his downfall in 1989. After the establishment of democratic government, there was much debate about whether to complete the building. It eventually was completed and today is the main seat of government in Romania.
