Star Camping

The Milky Way over Kessler Peak Mountain in Mojave National Preserve. I had been out shooting Galaxy photography early this month, and due to the heat factor of the Mojave Desert, I decided to make one last trip for 2017.

After spending the entire day driving around the 4th Largest National Park in the CONUS, I found this spot to shoot night photography. This area is tucked away between huge boulders and massive amounts of Joshua trees, located on a trail between Kessler Rd, and Cima Rd.

This was my last panorama of the night. A 27 shot 3 row panorama. By 0230 hrs, the Milky Way was high in the sky. Thus, resorting to 3 row panorama to get it all in. In the foreground is the overnight camp area with time lapse camera on the right. I used several low power LED lamps to light up the foreground for the time lapse, and a head lamp to light paint the panoramas. Although far from Vegas and Prim Valley, the light pollution is still present.

27 shot, 3 vertical rows, Nikon D7100, Tamron 28-75mm at 28mm, f/2.8, ISO 2500, 20 second exposure. Also, it's the first time using the Sunwayfoto 64M indexing rotor, set to 20 degrees. The indexing rotor makes shooting much faster and more efficient. Using a Ball Head would take about 15 min to shoot this panorama. Using the Indexing Rotor and tilt head takes about 10 min. Really comes in handy when doing large panoramas where time is of the essence. My goal is to get a 20mm f/1.8 Nikon to speed up the panorama process. If you use a Nikon 20mm f/1.8 for night sky let me know how it works out. Thanks.
