Triggered by a comment by Wblut about creating a lattice structure, I quickly added the volumeutils to the mix and swept a volumetric brush along the edges of the mesh, then applied several iterations of smoothing to get rid of the initial voxel look... result!!!
(Ps. Through this experiment I also figured out how Joris Laarman's Bone Chair might have been done...)
