take me home

to the place I belong

Short version: I came across a dog and took his picture.

Long version: We had a crazy adventure today!

There's this huge plot of land I've been driving by lately and I finally decided to take Hike out there this afternoon for some photos and off leash roaming. It's a lot of ground, and totally deserted, bordering the river with a wall of trees and shrubs.

We're walking along, waiting for the sun to set for more optimal photo light, when I hear barking from the wooded area. Since we were really in the middle of nowhere, I figured some strays had taken up residence in the shade. Not that we get many strays here but y'know, better than thinking someone had dumped some puppies.

I didn't REALLY want to go check it out since it involved crawling through thick vegetation into who knows what, and here I am a single female with a thousand dollars worth of camera on my neck and my car parked 20 yards away - keys in my pocket... No one would even know I was missing!

Of course, Hike, having already made up his mind, dove right in...

Hoping there wasn't a momma dog waiting to rip his head off for going near her pups, what could I do but follow him?

Well, I ended up finding a little campground amidst a cave formed by the trees. I guess some homeless people have been using it as their base. Luckily they weren't there at the time, but this guy was!

I fell in love instantly. GUH. The picture doesn't even cover it; I didn't want to linger and I kept looking over my shoulder so the photos were hasty.

He was incredibly sweet and craving attention, since obviously his humans are out on the streets for most of the day.

He had a companion (pictured below), and they both had food and water, so I shouldn't really be judgmental, but it was so, SO tempting to pull the chain off the tree, load the pup into my car, and drive off.

I'm half and half on the whole "homeless with a dog" situation.

On one hand, I hate when people sit begging on sidewalks with a dog, so you feel bad for the animal and give them a spare buck. On the other hand, I figure, there's hundreds and hundreds of dogs in Indy shelters alone, and they've got much less than these guys do.

While I'm sure a cutie like this pup would find a loving home instantly if given the chance (heck mine's wide open!), maybe he's already lucky enough to have one.

Both dogs seemed healthy, surprisingly clean for the situation they're living in, friendly, happy... a little lonely maybe but we paid them a visit, didn't we? I don't know the circumstances of his people. They're probably doing what they can.

But man, that face... It was hard to leave him behind. Especially since soon after we headed out, a huge thunderstorm rolled in :(

I'll have to check in on them from time to time. Just hope I don't get myself killed!

+2 in the comments. Sorry for the long story but I can't stop thinking about him!
