BULLOCKS WILSHIRE

Photos taken on 12/25/2008 along Wilshire Blvd. at Westmoreland. Photos taken during Christmas 2008 of the former Bullocks Wilshire Department Store. This was the first branch of Bullocks Department Store, and it was built at a time when the area had a entire different population. It catered to the rich, famous and upper class clientele of the area. To differentiate a regular Bullocks from the more fancy Bullocks, it was named Bullocks Wilshire. Sadly, the area changed, leaving the store out of touch with the neighboring community. As part of consolidations of the 1990's, Federated Department Stores combined the Bullocks Wilshire Department Store Chain and the I. Magnin Department Store Chain, leaving only the I. Magnin name. Therefore, prior to the Bullocks Wiltshire Store's closure, Federated Department Stores renamed this store: I. Magnin, For this store, they also left the original Bullocks Wiltshire Signs on the building. In or around 1993, the store closed. Immediately, when Federated began to remove several historical items from the old store, the City and the different historical preservation groups and agencies made them return them. The building was eventually bought by South Western Law University and it has been converted into a law library. Several of the old sections and departments of the former Bullocks Wilshire were save, restored and transformed to use in the library. It is know known as the South Western Law Library Building.

About a couple of blocks down Wilshire Blvd. is the former Sheraton Townhouse Hotel. In the late 1990, the Sheraton Hotel was closed and there was talk of demolition. The City and the Community stepped in and the the building was saved and its owners converted the old hotel into co-op type apartments, where the tennanats are required to do service in the building as well as pay rent (as of about 5 or 6 years ago). Remanants of the former Sheraton Townhouse still can still be seen atop the building, only the letters: "TOWNHOUSE" can be seen on one side and only an "O" can be seen on the other side.
