Band-tailed Fruiteater

The Band-tailed Fruiteater (Pipreola intermedia) is a member of the Cotinga family of birds found in the tropical rainforests of South and Central America. The Band-tailed Fruiteater is found at high altitude (7,500 to 10,000 feet, or about 2,300 to 3,000 meters) on the eastern slopes of the Andes in Peru and Bolivia.

This male shows the typical marking of its gender — green overall, with a black head and bib, narrow yellow collar, and yellow underbelly with green and black chevrons on its flanks. Both sexes have red beaks and legs, as well as the broad black tail band with white tip that gives the species its name.

Taken along the Carretera a Manu, Provincia de Paucartambo, Cuzco, Peru. Elevation 9,360 feet (2,853 meters).
