Lyn, the proprietor of Haggle Vinyl, is a friendly man. If he notices you browsing he will engage you in conversation. He will test your knowledge and authenticity, he likes to know where his customers are coming from. Lyn doesn’t go in for the hard sell, but he is interested in people and he has his own point of view about things. We chatted for a while, and when we got round to the subject of live music and local venues he told me this story.
One day a big American guy in an expensive coat came into the shop. The visitor focussed in Lyn's collection of Sun Ra records. Lyn’s curiosity was aroused, he engaged the man in conversation. The man’s knowledge of the Sun Ra Arkestra was both extensive and intimate. Lyn enquired, as is his way: “who are you that you know so much about Sun Ra?” The man replied: “My Name is Marshall Allen, I look after the Arkestra these days and we’re at Café Oto tonight.”
